Hypoxic Treatment
Hypoxic Training
(Enhancing Cellular Oxygenation and Energy Production)
Intermittent Hypoxic Treatment (IHT) is a form of adaptive medicine, an innovative and growing branch of science and healing. Adaptive medicine makes use of the fact that by adapting to new and challenging environmental conditions or physical loads, an organism will develop its genetic potential to withstand these challenges. The changes that come about can result in increased health and wellbeing through a number of different mechanisms – including improved stress handling ability, increased oxygen efficiency, improved metabolic efficiency, improved ability to handle free radicals due to an increase in the body’s internal anti-oxidant system capacity and improved brain/nervous system adaptability.
IHT increases the ability of the body to metabolize, transport and utilize oxygen. Adaptation to a lower oxygen environment causes the body to produce a chain of biological reactions, extracting more oxygen from the cells. Heart, spleen and lungs are also stimulated to increase their functions. The body then has an increased functional reserve that can offset fatigue and enhance areas of functioning in the body that require oxygen.
After adaptation to lower levels of oxygen have been achieved, (generally 10-20 sessions), is common to find increased levels of certain enzymatic antioxidants, such as glutathione peroxidase and super oxide dismutase in the body. Increased neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, improved metabolic efficiency, improved blood sugar, insulin levels, and neuroendocrine function, as well as increased tolerance to toxic substances and improved tolerance to exercise.

In elite athletes, courses of IHT has been shown to regularly improve their performances by 1-3%. Non-athletes who begin an exercise program along with IHT can have exceptional increases in their fitness.

IHT for the non-athlete can be made part of an overall program with diet and exercise for improving energy, stamina, fitness and weight loss. In the athletic world, hypoxic training has already become a standard feature of sportsmen’s training processes. Significant Improvements are Apparent in the following Illnesses In general, IHT improves overall homeostasis and immunological status. The later means that the occurrence of allergies and inflammatory diseases decrease and resistance to infections increase. This has been observed with continuous exposure to altitude as well as with IHT.
Studies have shown improvements to conditions such as:
- Ischemic heart diseases
- Hypertension
- Neurocirculatory asthenia
- Asthma and chronic bronchitis
- Ulcerative disease of the stomach and duodenum
- Liver and Pancreas diseases
- Diseases of locomotion
- Inflammatory diseases, such as arthritis, rhinitis, auto-immune thyroiditis and inflammatory skin diseases
- Anxiety and depression
- Infertility and improved pregnancy outcome
- Insulin resistance
- Sleep disorders, such as snoring, sleep apnea and insomnia
- Other benefits:
- Assists mild and moderate asthma
- Reduced fatigue
- Improves mental ability
- Reduces moderate stress levels
- Reduces blood pressure and moderate hypertension
- Improves metabolism
- Reduces work sick leave
- Increases energy levels
- Improves the immune system
- Reduces cholesterol
