Sleep Apnea
Symptoms of Sleep Apnea
- Primary symptoms of OSA are loud snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness
- Hyperpnoea, also Greek for 'less than normal' breathing, is not a complete cessation of breath but a perceptible
- Reduction in airflow leading to sleep fragmentation or decreased oxygen in the bloodstream
- The apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) or respiratory disturbance index (RDI) is the total number of apneas and hypopneas divided by the total sleep period, providing a measure of apnea severity
- Sleep apnea affects both males and females of all ages, although the typical sleep apnea patent is overweight and male, aged forty and over
- Untreated sleep apnea can be life-threatening - More than 2 million Australian suffer from sleep apnea and it is estimated that same amount go undetected
- Heartburn or headaches painful enough to wake you up
- Bedwetting or frequent toilet stops (up to seven per night)
- Night restlessness, including unwitting kicking, slapping or punching during sleep
- Sleep drunkenness, amnesia or even hallucinations
- Personality changes, including aggression, rage, jealousy or suspicion
- Waking up with a feeling of dying or choking during sleep
- Sexual problems, including decreased sex drive or even impotence
- Snoring up to 100 decibels and hearing loss
