Sleep Apnea

Incidence

Figures show more than eighty per cent of OSA sufferers remain undiagnosed and untreated.

In a study in Wisconsin (USA), a random sample of 603 working men and women found 24 per cent of men and 9 per cent of women had sleep disordered breathing.

A study in New South Wales of 441 men and women used a higher threshold for diagnosing OSA and still found 25.9 per cent of men and 7.7 per cent of women met the criteria.

A Stanford study on truck drivers showed a prevalence of 80 per cent. Based on these studies, the total number of Australians suffering OSA would be close to 3.3 million people (with 2.7 million undiagnosed).
